Abstract

This article is part of the PhD research Ages of Expressionism - style setting and atmosphere in animated films, which has its origin in questioning the possible influences that the animated film received from expressionist movement – specially from the plastic arts and cinema. Therefore, the Animated Film would have the influences from cartoons, children’s books and live action cinema itself, and the specific influence of the German Expressionism is in the constitution of the language of animation. Among the various possibilities of analysis, we adopt here a historical and formal approach to identify one of the main formal expressive elements of German Expressionism – the lighting in chiaroscuro – and then verify the occurrence of this formal expressive element in the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
